We Appreciate You

When I was 15 years old my Dad left Cape Town
to work in Namibia so that he could earn more money
to pay for us to go to university.
I remember that times were tough as we had no car
and little money and many times my Mom and I had
to walk far to the shops and back
carrying pockets of onions and potatoes.
Yet now we are so grateful for his sacrifices
as my siblings and I are all well educated with good jobs.
On the 1st of December 2019 my 77yr old Dad
was in a hit and run bicycling accident
while he was practicing for the Argus Cycle Tour.
His leg was severely injured
and he consequently spent 26 days in three different hospitals
undergoing operations where skin was also grafted from his thigh.
Through this entire time, my Dad did not once complain
and even though the man who hit him was arrested
my Dad said that as he is young and has his whole life ahead of him,
my Dad will not make a civil case against him as he feels sorry for him
as he had just made an error in judgment.
My Dad has taught me to look beyond colour,
to rise above your circumstances,
save as much as you can for retirement
and to always be kind.

He sat for hours and days at the hospital during COVID
when our youngest son had his keloid behind his ear removed.
He even nurtured him when he got back because I had to go to school.
He patiently taught my older son how to drive and now my son got his driver's license.
He made a jungle gym for my kids and even a hammock for my little one.
He bonds with his kids when he shares his gardening skills and he even teams up with them,
exploring his culinary skills on weekends.
When he goes on conference, he remembers to get each one of them a little token
and the admiration in their eyes is priceless.
He doesn't forget to tuck them in, even though the two are grown.
He has a great sense of humour and keeps the kids and I occupied with his enthralling childhood tales.
